COSCAN Embarks on Historic Copenhagen Journey
The Collegium Scholare Antiquitatis (COSCAN), a prestigious scholarly advisory board of the Saga Heritage Foundation, is set to embark on a historic trip to Copenhagen in January. This milestone event marks the beginning of a groundbreaking project to bring the Flateyjarbok, a 14th-century Icelandic manuscript, to a global audience in English.
A key highlight of the visit will be a viewing of Tormod Torfæus' 1669 Danish translation of Flateyjarbok, housed in Copenhagen. Commissioned by King Frederick III of Denmark, this translation was the first organized effort to render Norse sagas into a modern language, laying the foundation for their enduring legacy in European literature.
COSCAN aims to use this historic context as a launchpad for its forthcoming English publication of Flateyjarbok, with Alison Finlay’s esteemed translation leading the way. The event also aligns with COSCAN's mission to connect past and present, emphasizing the manuscript's cultural and historical importance.
